The Usambara Mountains, part of the Eastern Arc mountain range, are located in the Lushoto District of the Tanga Region in northeastern Tanzania. Reaching altitudes of up to 2,290 meters, these mountains are a treasure trove of natural beauty and biodiversity. The town of Lushoto, a gateway to the Usambaras, is approximately 75 minutes from the mountains, and the distance from Moshi town to the Usambara Mountains is about 222 km by road.
4-Day Usambara Mountain Hike Itinerary
Day 1: Lushoto to Lukozi (11 km, ~6 hours hiking)
Your adventure begins at 8:30 am, departing from Lushoto town towards the royal village of Kwembago, the historic residence of the first king of the Sambaa tribe. From here, you’ll head into the Magamba tropical rainforest, where you can explore a German trench cave and encounter local wildlife such as black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, a variety of birds, colorful butterflies, and Jackson’s chameleons. Enjoy lunch at Magamba viewpoint, soaking in the scenic views, before continuing your hike to Lukozi. Your day ends with an overnight stay at Migombani Guesthouse.
Day 2: Lukozi to Rangwi
On the second day, you will hike from Lukozi to Rangwi. The trek offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and villages as you navigate through small paths winding between farms and dense vegetation. You will pass through traditional villages, experiencing firsthand the lifestyle of the local people. Enjoy a packed lunch en route and continue your journey to Rangwi, where you will spend the night in a charming local guesthouse.
Day 3: Rangwi to Mtae
The trek continues from Rangwi to Mtae, the final destination for the day. This part of the hike is known for its panoramic vistas of the Usambara range and the opportunity to see various species of flora and fauna unique to the region. You will hike through forests and grasslands, reaching viewpoints that offer expansive views of the plains below. After a full day of trekking, relax and unwind in Mtae village, where you’ll stay overnight at a local guesthouse.
Day 4: Mtae to Lushoto
On the last day, you’ll start your descent back towards Lushoto, enjoying the changing scenery as you move from mountain paths back into the rolling hills and valleys. The hike back provides a chance to see more of the Usambara landscape and interact with local farmers and villagers. Arriving in Lushoto, you will have completed an unforgettable journey through one of Tanzania’s most picturesque and culturally rich regions.
