Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a stunning part of the Serengeti plains, which extends into the Maasai Mara in Kenya. As you travel from Arusha to the Serengeti, you’ll pass through this incredible area, home to some of Tanzania’s most iconic landscapes and wildlife.
The Ngorongoro Crater: The most famous feature of the NCA is undoubtedly the Ngorongoro Crater. Although it represents only three percent (265 km²) of the entire NCA, the crater is a natural wonder, being the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. Spanning 23 kilometers in diameter and averaging a depth of 600 meters, this immense caldera was formed by a massive volcanic eruption and collapse millions of years ago.
The Ngorongoro Crater is renowned as one of the best places in Africa for wildlife viewing. Within the crater, over 20,000 large animals thrive, including some of Tanzania’s last remaining black rhinos. Visitors can also expect to see a variety of wildlife such as lions, elephants, buffalos, wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelles, zebras, hippos, and flamingos. However, you won’t find giraffes inside the crater as they are unable to bend their legs enough to navigate the steep slopes.
Oldupai Gorge: Close to the Serengeti National Park, the Oldupai Gorge offers a fascinating detour. This river canyon, carved 100 meters deep into the volcanic soils of the Serengeti Plains, is often referred to as “The Cradle of Mankind.” Oldupai Gorge is one of the world’s most significant prehistoric sites and has been pivotal in enhancing our understanding of early human evolution. A visit to Oldupai Gorge allows you to explore this vital archaeological site, where some of the oldest human fossils have been discovered, providing a glimpse into our distant past.
