Located within Arusha National Park, just 76 km from Moshi, Mount Meru offers a fantastic mountaineering experience in Tanzania without breaking the budget. Often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second tallest mountain, reaching an impressive altitude of 4,566 meters. This active stratovolcano (last erupted in 1910) provides a challenging yet rewarding climb, ascending along the narrow ridge of the volcanic cone with breathtaking views down into the crater and the smaller ash cone within.

From the summit of Mount Meru, climbers are treated to panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the expansive savannahs of Northern Tanzania. During your climb, you will stay in well-maintained huts within Arusha National Park, offering a comfortable bed to rest after a day of trekking. We recommend taking 4 days to fully enjoy the trek to the summit of Mount Meru, although it can be completed in 3 days if you’re short on time (please contact us if you wish to see the 3-day itinerary).

4-Day Mount Meru Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi to Miriakamba Huts (2,514m)
Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your accommodation in Moshi, followed by a scenic drive to Arusha National Park (approximately 1 hour). Upon arrival, you will register at the Momella Gate, where you will meet your armed ranger who will accompany you throughout the trek, along with our experienced team from Jambo Adventures. Unlike Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru has a single route for both ascent and descent, except for the initial stretch from Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut. We recommend taking the longer route on the first day to acclimatize better and conserve energy. Today’s hike is approximately 13.6 km with a 906-meter elevation gain, taking you through lush forest to the crater floor and up to Miriakamba Hut at 2,514 meters. Enjoy a lunch box en route and a hot dinner prepared by your mountain chef at the huts.

Day 2: Miriakamba Huts to Saddle Huts (3,570m)
On the second day, the trek continues with a steady ascent through scenic montane forests and moorlands towards the Saddle Huts, located at 3,570 meters. This section is approximately 6 km and involves a gradual climb, allowing further acclimatization. Along the way, you’ll have stunning views of Mount Meru’s crater and ash cone. Upon reaching Saddle Huts, you can choose to take an optional afternoon hike to Little Meru for acclimatization and more spectacular views. Dinner will be served at the huts, where you can relax and prepare for the summit attempt.

Day 3: Saddle Huts to Summit (Socialist Peak, 4,566m) to Miriakamba Huts (2,514m)
Summit day begins early, usually around midnight, to ensure you reach the peak in time to witness the sunrise from the summit of Mount Meru, also known as Socialist Peak. The climb from Saddle Huts to the summit is challenging, with steep ascents and exposed ridges, but the reward is worth the effort. Reaching the summit at 4,566 meters, you’ll enjoy incredible views of the surrounding landscapes, including Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. After a brief rest and photo opportunities at the summit, you will begin your descent back to Saddle Huts for a hot meal and a short rest. You’ll then continue descending to Miriakamba Huts for your final night on the mountain.

Day 4: Miriakamba Huts to Momella Gate
On the final day, you’ll descend from Miriakamba Huts back to Momella Gate. The descent takes you through lush forests, providing opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy the natural beauty of Arusha National Park. Upon reaching Momella Gate, you will receive your summit certificates, celebrate your achievement, and be driven back to your accommodation in Moshi or Arusha.
