Known to the Maasai people as the “Mountain of God,” Ol Doinyo Lengai stands at an impressive altitude of 2,890 meters (9,482 feet) above sea level. This active stratovolcano is a unique geological feature along the Great Rift Valley, a vast fault line that stretches from Djibouti to Mozambique. Ol Doinyo Lengai is not just any volcano; it is the only active volcano in the world that emits carbonatite magma, which flows at a relatively low temperature of around 500°C, making it as fluid as water.
The journey to Ol Doinyo Lengai is an adventure in itself, requiring a two-day trip from the nearest airport. As a result, this natural wonder is rarely visited, with only a handful of tourists or scientists making the climb each day. The trek is considered moderately challenging, with slopes averaging around 45 degrees. Near the summit, you may need to use your hands for stability due to ash and lava channels.
Climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai is both physically demanding and rewarding, offering a truly unique experience for those willing to take on the challenge. Due to the intense daytime heat, the best time to climb is in the middle of the night. This allows trekkers to witness a breathtaking sunrise at the summit and descend before the sun reaches its peak, making the trek more comfortable.
