Serengeti National Park
Serengeti National Park is the largest national park in Tanzania and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its vast landscapes and rich wildlife. The name “Serengeti” comes from the Maasai word siringet, which means “endless plains,” aptly describing this expansive park that covers 14,800 square kilometers (5,700 square miles). The Maasai people were the first to explore these plains over a century ago, and you will still encounter them during your safari.
Wildlife Highlights
Big Cats: Serengeti is world-famous for its high population of big cats. The park provides one of the best opportunities to see lions, cheetahs, and leopards in their natural habitat.
The Great Migration: One of the most spectacular wildlife events on Earth, the Great Migration, involves over a million wildebeest, zebras, and Thomson’s gazelles moving across the Serengeti in search of fresh grazing grounds. The migration is unpredictable, but here’s a guide to where you might find it:
- January to May: The migration is typically in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu.
- June to August: The herds move to the western Serengeti.
- September and October: They are often found between western and northern Serengeti, in the Ikoma area.
- November: The migration heads north, close to the Maasai Mara.
- December: The herds make a dramatic return south.
Predator Activity: The Serengeti is a hotspot for predator activity. Early morning safaris offer the best chance to witness thrilling scenes of big cats in action, as they hunt and feed. The presence of vultures and other scavengers adds to the dramatic wildlife encounters.
